Reinforce Learning At Home With Highlights Workbooks!

Since Scarlett started preschool in September 2016, she's learned far beyond the basics of colors, shapes, and numbers.  My tiny tot knows about the weather, plants and animals, and much more.  It's always interesting to see what's on the school's weekly agenda for the children to be taught.  Scarlett loves school and shocks me with what she knows that I had no clue about!

Highlights launched a new initiative in 2017 that goes beyond its unmistakable brand of "fun with a purpose" to help kids develop specific skills for school success.  Make learning fun through puzzles, activities and games for your little ones.  The new line, Highlights Learning, is headlined by a series of "Big Fun Workbooks" that introduce, reinforce, and strengthen skills in reading, writing, and early math for kids in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grades.

Highlights Learning is expanding its collection with Learn on The Go Practice Pads.  These small and compact pads feature beautifully colored high quality paper and are perfect for impromptu moments of bite-sized learning. They are ideal for throwing in a tote bag for traveling while in the car or on a plane, and make ideal birthday gifts as well as stocking stuffers.  If you're looking for an alternative to a mobile device while waiting at a restaurant or a waiting room, Highlights has you covered.

Scarlett received a few practice pads for tracing objects, numbers, letters, and shapes.  She also received a Big Fun Kindergarten workbook which will come in handy sooner rather than later.  I loved the compact size of the practice pads and how they can truly be brought anywhere.  The colors and pictures inside are bright and vivid, truly drawing littles in.

Whether your child is in preschool or not, workbooks are a wonderful resource to keep at home to reinforce what is taught at school.  Any of these titles would make ideal educational gifts for children for truly any occasion.  It's never too late or too early to learn!

Scarlett can identify letters but has a lot of trouble writing most of them.  The tracing practice pads are ideal for challenging her to give her the brain-boost she needs with writing uppercase and lowercase letters.  We've worked with tracing pads in the past and Scarlett can sometimes get frustrated if she can't perfect the letters instantly.  With workbooks her attention span is hit or miss, but we always try to do a few pages a night whether in a physical workbook or online learning game. I know it will pay off in the end.

The objects practice pad is unique as it offers a multitude of activities like mazes, connecting objects to their matches, and other hand-eye coordination games.  Scarlett enjoys this one the most because to her it's all fun but fun disguised through learning!

I'm saving the kindergarten activity book for a while because she still has one more year of preschool before going to kindergarten.  I know the work will be a little too advanced for her currently if we tried to do it.  The book has over 250 pages that build skills and confidence through puzzles and early learning activities. Children will partake in the alphabet, sight words,  writing, reading, numbers, matching, sorting, patterns and more.  There's truly something valuable on each and every page.

Since the practice pads are small and compact, we'll definitely be taking them on the plane to Grandma's house in December when we fly there.  A bonus that these books offer is the bonding and one-on-one time with a child which is priceless!

I'm looking forward to seeing how Scarlett's learning progresses as she uses these books over time.  I can't wait to see when she's able to write letters on her own.  It's priceless to see children's reactions when they are able to accomplish a new skill.

Teaching Children About Strangers

Over the course of the past few months, I've been talking to Scarlett about strangers.  I tell her we don't open the door for anyone we don't know, and we always check who is at the door.  I've mentioned that there are people in this world who do bad things and safety is always my #1 priority with her.

Of course I've spoken with Scarlett about not talking to strangers in public either.  One thing that I do struggle with with that topic is what strangers are okay to talk to and which ones are not.  I feel that it's confusing for Scarlett in some aspects and here's why.  If I tell her don't talk to any strangers and then a grocery store cashier says hi to her and I encourage her to say hi back to be polite.  I feel uncomfortable not encouraging her to say hello back even though I've previously said don't talk to strangers.  I'll have to see if I can work on this to make things easier with her.  Maybe I'll say the cashiers at certain stores are okay to say hi to, but nobody else is.

I don't know anyone's intention and I always err on the side of caution.  If someone comes up to us in a public place and wants to talk to Scarlett, I will keep on walking.  I always fear the worst and I don't like a man or a woman coming up randomly and talking to her.  It just makes me nervous.  I've heard too many stories about human trafficking lately where someone comes to talk to the parent and distracts them and someone else grabs the child when they turn around.  It's so scary.

One thing that I have trouble with is Scarlett walking away when we're in public places.  She doesn't want to ride in a cart in Walmart or Target and wants to walk beside me.  She doesn't always stay right beside me and I always tell her I can't see you if wander off or aren't near me.  Scarlett may want to go see the toys in the next aisle and for a brief second she's in that next aisle before me.  I always feel slightly panicked and I can't tell her enough about how she needs to say where I can see her.  We're still working on that on a daily basis and it's stressful.

I'd say more people in this world are good than bad, but you really can't trust anyone you don't know. It's imperative that you teach your children about strangers and staying where you can see them from an early age.  There are many child-centered videos about strangers online as well as books about the subject.  The Berenstain Bears books series has a wonderful book called Stranger Danger that is a great teaching tool for parents everywhere.  We can't predict the future in terms of what will happen with children, but safety is paramount to me as a parent.

Fun Winter Activities for Kids

With winter on the horizon here in New England, it will surely feel like warm temps are light years away. It can be difficult to keep young kids entertained when you have to stay inside, but don't let the weather bring you down. You can have just as much winter fun indoors too!

Here are some fun activities that I came up with to keep kids busy when it's cold outside.
1. Throw a Dance Party.
Turn up your favorite jams and get those moves going! Your child will enjoy getting their energy out and being silly with you. Who doesn't love singing and dancing along to their favorite music either?
2. Make Play Dough
There are so many easy-to-make play dough recipes online. You can find one using basic kitchen ingredients that is non-toxic. The best part about these recipes is that you can make them in your own kitchen while staying warm. Break out the cookie cutters and make play-dough dinosaurs, hearts, stars, and so much more.
3. Create Mini Movies on Your iPhone
If you have a budding actor or actress on your hands, they'll really enjoy this one. Have them act out improvised scenes and film it. They'll love seeing themselves on the "big screen". Maybe you can even let them film you? Your little one will get a kick out of filming you!
4. Bake Cupcakes.
Every child loves cupcakes. Bake classic chocolate or vanilla cupcakes and let them decorate the sweet treats. Set out bowls of sprinkles, chocolate chips, sugar pearls and frosting. They'll absolutely love having the opportunity to decorate their own cupcake. They'll love getting to eat their creation almost as much as making it.
5. Boardgames.
Candyland is always a kid's favorite game. If you have a child who's old enough to not put small game pieces in their mouth, why not play a board game with them? Monopoly provides hours of fun and so does Mouse Trap. Your little one will love spending time and making memories with you.
6. Design T-Shirts.
Every child loves arts and crafts. Buy some plain white t-shirts from the craft store along with craft markers, pens, and paints. Have them draw and design to their hearts content. Glittery stars, hearts, and flowers will come to life on the shirt and look wonderful. Your child will be so proud to show off their apparel creation to everyone!

Bring Ponycycle to Your Child's Playroom! #HolidayGiftGuide

As the temperatures drop and drop, it gets harder to have Scarlett play outside.  She needs to play outside on a regular basis to get her energy out.  When it starts to get really cold and in the 30's, I make her stay inside.  We have a mini trampoline in our playroom that she can bounce on to her hearts content.  Also, I may throw some pillows on the floor and have her do a mini obstacle course to also keep her active.  I'm always looking for new things or ways to keep her energy at bay while indoors.

PonyCycle is an adorable, child sized ride on toy pony which relies on child power to move.  Your little one will feel like they're riding a real pony, as a natural riding motion is required to get pony moving.  The ponies come in a variety of colors and styles depending on your child's interests.

There's also a zebra and a unicorn if your child wants to stray slightly from the horse selections. Depending on your child's age, PonyCycle comes in two sizes, small which is for ages 3-5, and medium which is for ages 4-9.  Whichever PonyCycle you choose, I can guarantee your son or daughter will absolutely love it.  Can you imagine seeing the joy on their face when they see it underneath the Christmas tree on Christmas morning?

Scarlett received a black and white Ponycycle and was absolutely thrilled when it arrived.  The installation process was simple, just connecting the head to the base and zipping it up.  I dislike putting together toys and always find it harder than it should be.  Luckily, this was easy and just took a few moments.

Since Ponycycle is powered by movement, you won't have to worry about constantly buying expensive batteries to power the horse.  From the minute we had Ponycycle installed, Scarlett was ready to use it.

The black and white Ponycycle we received was a size medium for ages 4-9.  The benefit of this size is that it will provide years of fun!  The pony is beautiful and very realistic down from the markings to the soft hair.  I love how sturdy and well built it is, it feels like such high quality.  It will definitely delight any child and provide hours of fun.

Scarlett immediately jumped on the horse and was ready to go!  She is almost 4 but was not too short for it at all.  I had to help her get on it due to the height of the horse, but after that she completely understood what to do.  There were no issues with Scarlett not being able to hold onto the handlebars or her feet slipping from the foot straps. She loved it and said it was so much fun! My tiny tot also enjoyed petting and hugging the horse and telling me how soft he was.

The horse doesn't go too fast which is important so children don't fall off and get hurt.  The Ponycycle truly mimics horseback riding and gives kids a fun ride.

Since our house is on the smaller side, we don't have a large amount of space for Scarlett to ride the horse.  We have a moderate amount of hardwoods downstairs that she is using to her advantage.  Due to this, we will probably have to use Ponycycle outside to really maximize the fun!

I can guarantee Scarlett will be using this indoors and outdoors for some time to come.  What child wouldn't want to have their very own ride on horse? If you're looking to buy a child an unforgettable Christmas or birthday present, Ponycyle is a great choice.

Give Your Child A Beautiful Teepee From Teepee Joy #HolidayGiftGuide

Over the summer, I redecorated Scarlett's room slightly.  We got rid of her crib with the rail off and transitioned her to a cute espresso sleigh toddler bed.  Along with the new bed, I found a pretty bedding set and matching rug to give her room a boost it desperately needed.  Scarlett was thrilled with the mini makeover and it finally felt like a little girl's room and not a baby's.  There are still areas of her room I want to change and I've been on the hunt for something unique to add an element of fun.

Teepee Joy offers the largest selection of children's teepees online.  All teepees are made-to-order in a small shop in Chicago.  There are plenty of teepees to choose from for any child's preferences including solid colors and patterns.  Girls will love a beautiful pink and white chevron teepee while boys will enjoy a sailboat or dinosaur theme.

Whichever teepee you choose, you have the choice to add coordinating matching pillows, mats, and banners to really make the teepee come to life.  If you don't see a pattern you absolutely love, feel free to customize your own pattern! Choose from hundreds of fabrics in different colors to make your teepee dreams a reality.  Maybe you'd prefer gold teddy bears or pink flowers instead? Get creative and make your child one happy boy or girl!

With Christmas on the horizon, it's not too early to start your holiday shopping.  If you want to order a teepee for your child for Christmas, I know they'd be wild with excitement when they see it under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning! Feel free to keep the company in mind for future children's gift giving ideas too.   Parents will be pleased to now that each teepee is made-to-order with the utmost attention to detail.  Chemical-free fabrics along with high-quality USA manufacturing standards ensure the safety of your tiny tot.

Scarlett has had a changing table in her room that I've been meaning to move out for a long time now. We haven't used it in about two years and it's honestly just taking up space.  You know how you put off certain projects for later? That's what I've been doing and it's time to address it.  I knew moving the changing table out would provide the perfect space for the Think Pink Teepee.  What little girl wouldn't want a teepee in her room?

However way you choose to decorate your child's teepee, it will surely be a magical place whether it's in their room or in the playroom.  Let the teepee be a place where your child plays with friends or relaxes and enjoys some peace and quiet with a book and some snacks.

The teepee arrived in a case unassembled. The assembly was pretty straight forward and simple.  I did watch a YouTube video to help me assemble it which came in handy.  It did take me longer to complete than it should have because I kept doing something wrong until I realized.  I was lucky that the teepee arrived when Scarlett was in school so I could have it in her room ready to surprise her when she came home.

I wanted the teepee to be a surprise, so I didn't tell Scarlett that it was coming ahead of time.  The teepee arrived with a coordinating mat, but I wanted to put other things inside it to make it cozy and a truly special spot for Scarlett. Scarlett has a sheep pillow that she loves, so I put that inside for her to relax on.  I also ordered a sequin pillow that is in the shape a heart to add to the comfort.  Her stuffed Mickey Mouse made himself comfortable in his new teepee home. Lastly, I put her two favorite books inside so she can read them in ultimate comfort.  To cap everything off, I ordered fairy lights from Amazon to decorate the outside.  I think the teepee looked amazing and wish I had a special hangout spot just for me too!

Once Scarlett got home from school and discovered it, she was instantly in love.  She said "whoa!" as soon as she saw it and wanted to climb inside right away.  I was happy that it fit perfectly in the spot that I designated it for.  The teepee is very high quality, sturdy, and well made.  Children will love the windows on the side so they can look out and see everything around them.  The lights that I added around the teepee really make it ultra special and fun.  I wish I had a teepee in my room when I was a child!  The pink and white are bright and vivid and really stand out.  Having the coordinating mat really adds to the pizzazz factor of the teepee.  Plus, it's extremely comfortable to sit on!

I can tell this is going to be one of Scarlett's new favorite hangout spots for years to come.  She doesn't play too much in her room because it's small and we keep most of the toys in the playroom.  I'm hoping that this will encourage her to want to spend more time in her room.  I know her friends will love it when they come over!

The teepee is pretty compact and is not too large once expanded.  It's portable which is perfect for taking on holiday road trips so your child can have fun with their cousins.

If you're looking for a gift for a child who has it all, I can guarantee they don't have a teepee.  Go ahead and make their day!

Is Hiring a Lawyer To Fight a Traffic Ticket Expensive?

Is Hiring a Lawyer To Fight a Traffic Ticket Expensive?

Ending up with a ticket because you went over the speed limit or ran through a red light can be expensive. Many people have to dip into their rainy day funds to handle these unexpected expenses. However, you can actually save money by having a Santa Ana traffic ticket lawyer handle your case, which will probably cost less money than the ticket.

It Is More Affordable Than Most People Realize

Most people naturally think hiring a lawyer of any kind will cost a lot of money. What those individuals fail to realize is that it does not take as much of the attorney’s time to deal with a traffic ticket case than defending someone against shoplifting or assault. Plenty of  traffic ticket lawyers can handle dozens of these cases in a single day. As a result, they often do not charge as much. In fact, plenty of these lawyers charge as little as $99 for a case. This is a great deal considering you could pay over $400 for running a red light.

There Is a Greater Chance of Getting the Ticket Dismissed

Judges will be more intimidated if you have an attorney by your side. A lot of people think they can save money by defending themselves in court, but the truth is they typically do not see substantial results because they do not adequately understand the law. A ticket lawyer will know precisely what tactics to implement to get you out of paying the fine. It is a small investment that usually results in greater savings than if you go through the process independently.

As soon as you get a ticket, you need to start looking in your area for an experienced traffic lawyer. You can contact a lawyer near you who offers free consultations, so you get a thorough understanding of how much you will need to pay before hiring anyone.

Get Up Close With Nature This Holiday Season #HolidayGiftGuide

I live right next to a forest and frequently see chipmunks, birds, squirrels, and rabbits in my backyard.  It's interesting to look outside and see some kind of wildlife at all times.  My daughter and dog love to watch the animals together all day long.  It would be nice to see the different bird species up close without scaring them away.  That dream can now be a reality for anyone!

Nature Anywhere offers a Birds-I-view Window Bird Feeder that will make your house their favorite feeding spot! Each feeder is made with high quality, anti-uv plastic glass which allow it to stay clear and beautiful for years.  Fill the feeder with a bird's favorite seed and it's ready to use right out of the box.  No assembly required, just stick it to the window and you're done.  The patent pending feeding tray allows you to slide it open and closed to fill and re-fill it.  You'll love watching the birds flock to the feeder all day long to eat.

The Birds-I-View Window Bird Feeder makes a perfect gift for practically anyone in your family including hikers and those who enjoy nature.  An older retired person would find a lot of joy in the feeder and how it brings nature right to their windowsill.  Children would be enthusiastic to watch the birds and learn about wildlife and bird species too.  It's always nice to turn an everyday thing into an educational lesson!

Stick the feeder on your window and you'll attract beautiful Robin's, Cardinal's and who knows what else? Everyday will be a surprise!

Keep the feeder in mind for Christmas presents both present and future.

4 Foods You Should Eat Before Bed Time for Better Sleep

There are plenty of ways to improve sleep, starting with the best mattress and ending with gently scented candles and the wonderful sound of whales singing. However, some specialists say we don’t need to go through that much trouble for a good night’s sleep.

Sometimes, all you need is just the right food and a comfortable bed. So, today I will tell you about the best foods to eat when you want to crawl under the blankets and fall sound asleep. Still, keep in mind that it’s not recommended to go to bed with a full tummy (the last meal should be with two or three hours before sleep time and should not be large).

#1: Bananas

Usually consumed with half an hour before a workout or when your stomach hurts, bananas are also great at inducing sleep because of their high magnesium content. Magnesium relaxes the muscles so you’ll feel a wonderful sensation of inner peace as soon as the head hits the pillow.

Furthermore, bananas also contain melatonin and serotonin, two chemicals which induce sleep. Still, make sure to not eat too many, especially if they’re ripe! You may get a sugar rush!

#2: Honey

This sweet nectar is a miracle substance, and has so many applications in self-care and health, that it’s a wonder not everyone uses it! So, if you have some honey in the house, get a teaspoon before bed – it stimulates the release of melatonin and shuts off orexin (a chemical that keeps you alert), paving the path towards beautiful dreams.

#3: Cherries

These wonderful fruits of summer are among the few natural foods to contain melatonin (just like bananas) so you should not ignore them if you want a good nights’ sleep. You can consume them as is or as a tart, but it’s important to not eat too much. Cherries are also rich in fructose, which is a type of sugar and may have the opposite effect if you eat too many cherries right before bed.

#4: Milk

We all know that a glass of warm milk before bed makes the sleep come faster, but we don’t really know why. It seems that milk contains tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin. However, the veracity of milk’s sleep-inducing powers are on a debate as some scientists say it’s not that effective.

Regardless, some people can swear by it so you should give a try.  You can even add in a teaspoon of honey, if you want to make it even more delicious. Also, if you’re lactose intolerant, you can replace it with soy milk or any other type of milk you can tolerate.

In Conclusion

As you can see, all the foods recommended are natural, so no fats or crispy chips are recommended before bed. But as we said before, it’s not just the food that helps you sleep; it’s also the mattress. For instance, Kamil from MattressMatchers.com said that, if the bed doesn’t fit your needs as a sleeper, it doesn’t really matter what you do to sleep better – you won’t be able to.

So, before you go raiding the fridge, have a look at your bed; is it everything you need? It supports your back and keeps the surface fluffy? If not, maybe it’s time to think about a replacement.

2018 Winter Clothing Trends That Will Look Great on Most Women

Now is the perfect time to treat yourself to some nice new warm clothes. As you can see here most stores already have a full range of boots, coats and knitwear in stock. So, finding what you really want should not be difficult.

Back to the 80s for boots

For the winter months, a pair of stylish boots is essential for any woman. This year, a lot of designers
have been inspired by the fashion trends of the 80s. So, there are some really great looking ankle boots or booties to choose from. If you want something a little longer, check out the ruched ones.

These typically finish mid-calf. They are designed to be worn outside of your trousers or jeans, so will add a little extra interest to your outfit.
If you prefer to wear skirts or dresses, do not worry because there are plenty of knee-high boots available. This year’s high gloss or animal print finishes are a great way to add a touch of glamour to your look.

2018 Coat Trends
No winter wardrobe is complete without a winter coat. If you know you are going to be spending quite a bit of time outdoors, always opt for a full length one.

Again, a lot of designers appear to have been inspired by the 80s and early 90s. So, expect to see trench coats and camel coats in most shops. Both of which are a great looking. Their classic styling means that they never really go out of fashion and that they can be worn in practically any setting. Both would look fantastic worn over a formal office outfit, but work equally well when worn with jeans.

For the warmer days hunt out a jacket or mid-length coat. Boyfriend blazers, cardigan coats, ski jackets and plaid are all on trend. So, it really does not matter if you want to create a casual or a more formal look you are not going to have any problems buying what you want.
2018 must-have knitwear items

Every woman needs to have several color co-ordinated tops in her wardrobe, preferably ones that can easily be worn in layers. This is the best way to ensure that you will never be too hot or cold, regardless of the weather.

This year, knitwear is very much the way to go. In the shops, you will find everything from thin twinset style tops to huge cuddly, furry, oversized, bat-winged jumpers.
If there is one stand out trend, it is the return of the cardigan. This is the must-have knitwear item and it is well worth treating yourself to at least one. You will find it to be a surprisingly versatile item of clothing. This post I wrote a while back will give you some ideas of how to wear one. I suggest you read it before you go cardi shopping. It will help you to narrow down your options and buy the right type for you.

Hats Gloves and Scarves

These are important items that can make a huge difference to your overall look. Which type you need to buy largely depends on the style of coat and footwear you own. So, it is wise to buy those items before you go out shopping for your hat, gloves and scarf.

Letting Go of Control As a Parent

I've taught many things in my 3.5 years as a parent.  Scarlett has mastered knowing crucial toddler subjects like colors and shapes, as well as learning how to use utensils while eating.  My tiny tot has learned how to use the bathroom among many other toddler milestones.

While I applaud every skill and milestone Scarlett reaches, I find myself sometimes wanting her to do things how I want them done.  I was thinking about this earlier today while talking to my husband. I've had this thought before and I know it's something I have to work on.  Scarlett is learning and growing everyday and while she is wildly independent in some areas, others I feel like I still want to step in for guidance.

For example, getting dressed.  She struggles slightly with putting her shirt on while getting dressed in the morning.  In my defense, I feel that it's easier for me to just do it for her instead of sitting there watching her try to put it on backwards or put both arms in the same hole.  I am well aware that if I continue to do it for her she won't learn.  It's not that I don't want her to master this skill, it's more that I just want her shirt on without time being wasted.  She doesn't request my help, yet I step in.

Just the other day Scarlett wanted to pour soup into a pot to heat up on the stove.  I said okay knowing that we may have a mess.  Of course some of the soup spilled onto the stove that was just freshly wiped down.  In my head I thought to myself well if I poured it in, there'd be no mess.  But then you have to look at in the sense of a child wanting to help to gain confidence and independence of doing things for themselves.  That is more important than taking 30 seconds to clean up a spill.

One thing that I struggle with as a parent is letting go of the control that I so desperately desire. There are many areas of my parenting that I feel confident with and know that I'm excelling in.  Everyone has areas of weaknesses in life, but the most important thing is that you recognize them.  I want to lessen my level of control to help my child be the best they can be.

First Pumpkin Patch Visit of The Season!

Scarlett and her friend went to our local pumpkin patch today for their first visit of the fall season. The pumpkin patch has animals you can feed, a small playground, the pumpkin patch itself, and many other elements that the kiddies love.  I, of course, brought my camera along to document some pumpkin pictures.  I never miss the opportunity to take some pictures! Has your family been to a patch yet this Fall?

Boost Your Body Confidence at The Gym

I had a membership to my local gym last year that I wasn't going to as much as I should have.  I found it hard to go at night because I was tired from watching Scarlett all day.  I occasionally went when she was at school, but I mostly craved the free time to myself at home.  When my membership expired, I did not renew it.  Luckily, I found a gym in the next town that offered childcare.  Now, I go during the day and take Scarlett with me.  She plays with the other kids while I exercise.  It's a win-win for both.

One thing that a woman needs at the gym while she works out is a great Knix.  Of course comfortable workout clothes are ideal too, but an excellent sports bra is mandatory.  Support during exercise is important for maintaining form and feeling confident too.  A high impact sports bra will transform how you feel before, during, and after your workout.

The Knix sports bra supports women up to a size 42G, while providing a material that breathes, so no size is left out.  If you're doing intense cardio or doing a lot of jumping around like in a Zumba class, the sports bra is made for that! The best part about the sports bra is that it's easy to take off.  I've had my fair share of dealing with hard-to-take off sports bras, and it's not fun.  Women everywhere will be thrilled that the bra cups separate and encapsulate the breasts which dramatically reduces movement.  Nobody wants to be distracted by having to adjust their bra during a workout.

If you regularly exercise and eat right, you'll quickly get into fantastic shape and your body confidence at the gym will be at record high.  You can give some of the credit to your sports bra too!

*DISCLOSURE* This is a post on behalf of Knix.  All thoughts are strictly my own.
